Taking the time to pause and reflect on our lives isn’t always the simplest thing to do. 

Most of our days seem to be filled with activities from start to finish, without much time to be still. Even when we’re not doing much, how often do we find ourselves simply looking out the window or taking a long walk, quietly reflecting on our lives, and the direction in which we might be going?

Taking the time to pause and reflect can make us feel calmer, offer a new perspective, and help us appreciate ourselves and other people in our lives more.

It can help us notice and feel grateful for aspects of our lives, which we may sometimes take for granted. It can open our eyes to the changes we may need to embrace, so that we can live a more fulfilling life.



If you’re one of those people who struggle to find time to pause and reflect, then you might find it easier to do so today, on the last day of the year.

So, how about making yourself a warm cup of tea (or an icy glass of gin – it’s your call), and spending a few minutes with yourself, remembering the things that defined your 2017?



It’s time to think of all the things you learnt and achieved over the past year – and give yourself a little pat on the back. 

We’re not talking about winning the Nobel prize, or becoming the CEO of a large corporation (but if that’s what you aimed for and achieved in 2017, then that’s pretty awesome!).

Think of ALL your achievements, no matter how small they may seem to you. They are worth feeling good about nonetheless.

You may be tempted to think that you simply got lucky, but it wasn’t just luck. It was your decisions, and your effort. You made it happen.



Think of the things that didn’t go as planned, but worked out somehow. Sometimes you just have to embrace the unexpected, no matter how much it scares you.

When a challenge is thrown at you, you are given a chance to learn more about yourself, and reminded that there are people out there who you can rely on.



Think of the difficulties you overcame over the past year – and may still be overcoming. They make you stronger, wiser and more prepared for the unexpected in the future – and sometimes, they just have to be part of our story. Maybe so that you could help someone else who is dealing with a similar challenge?

It may seem that others don’t have that much on their plate, but often, what we see isn’t the entire picture. Those around you may be fighting their own private battles. Dealing with difficulties can present an opportunity to find or establish a support network around you, and to bring more compassion into your life.



Think of the people that have been there for you over the past year – aren’t they a wonderful bunch of humans? You are so lucky to have them around. Feel the gratitude for the people who care about you – your life would be very different if they weren’t around. Sometimes, it’s easy to take your loved ones for granted, but let’s think of them as a gift (because they are).

We’re now off to do some reflecting of our own – to think of what a wonderful ride 2017 has been, and of all the things we’ve learnt. To remember the things and people we should feel grateful for. To think about how we could make 2018 even more special.
